The Brown Derby was an iconic restaurant in Hollywood shaped like Derby hat. It was well known because it opened during the Golden Age of Hollywood in the Mid 1920s. This cocktail can be found in the PDT Cocktail App who credits Dale DeGroff for finding it in Bussa & Cardozo’s book Hollywood Cocktails in the 1930s.
I love bourbon, I love grapefruit, and of course honey, but I never imagined that a cocktail with all three of these would be good in a cocktail, much less one that I like. But I loved this cocktail, and I do plan to have another experimenting with the ratios, perhaps a touch less of bourbon or grapefruit, but the measure of honey works well here.
- 2 ounces bourbon (Elijah Craig Single Barrel 94 proof)
- 1 ounce grapefruit juice
- 3/4 ounce honey syrup (50% water, 50% honey)
Shake all ingredients with ice, strain into a chilled cocktail glass. No garnish.
