Cuba Kula

An original drink drink by one of the first bartenders of Don the Beachcomber in 1935.  Ray later went on to open the Tiki-Ti, now the one of the oldest tiki bars still in operation and owned by his grandson. [CREDIT: Beachbum Berry].  For me, this is a very unbalanced drink. The lime is overpowering, and I knew that when I saw 2 ounces of lime juice. The rums are strong, but not strong enough to cut through the lime, and the honey is not enough sweetness to offset all the citrus. The original does call for straight honey, uncut with water, but honestly, the extra half ounce of water to make honey mix will not matter.

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 ounces fresh lime juice
  • 1 ounce orange juice
  • 1 ounce dark rum (Coruba)
  • 1 ounce Demerara rum
  • 1/2 ounce 151 rum
  • 1/2 ounce honey mix
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • 1 dropper Pernod or Absinthe, or herbsaint

Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker, shake well and pour all into a tall glass with cherry garnish.
