One of the simplest, yet iconic rum cocktails that screams a tropical setting is the Daiquiri.  Writer Ernest Hemingway was legendary for drinking them often. In fact, there is a bronze statue of him at La Floridita in Cuba. If nothing else, this could serve as a litmus test for rum if you can’t drink it straight. Simply follow the formula, and you will see the true character of the rum sing out. However, you will find that the younger, lightly aged rums work better for this cocktail.

This is another simple recipe that can most easily be remembered as “3, 2, 1” = 3 parts rum, 2 parts lime, 1 part sugar. While you can certainly get the full impact of this cocktail with authentic Cuban rum like Havana Club 3yr, you might just have to substitute it with a light or slightly aged Puerto Rican rum because of the ensuing embargo on Cuban products in the USA.

  • 2 ounces Cuban or Puerto Rican Rum
  • 3/4 ounces lime juice
  • 1/2 ounce simple syrup

Shake all ingredients with plenty of ice. While often is it served on the rocks in a cocktail glass, or even as a frozen drink, I prefer it strained.
